Education & research

McKenzie Institute India was founded in 2012 and incorporated under Section 8 of the Companies Act, 1956, in 2013 — a not-for-profit institute dedicated to musculoskeletal education in India.

Its objectives are to educate physiotherapists, the medical profession and the public in the philosophy developed by Robin McKenzie and its application to Mechanical Diagnosis & Therapy of mechanical spinal and musculoskeletal disorders — and to promote and support research that advances the knowledge of MDT.

What is Mechanical Diagnosis & Therapy?

MDT is a system of assessment and management for musculoskeletal disorders, built around the patient's active involvement in their own recovery.

01

Assess

A thorough mechanical assessment — a detailed history and physical examination, using repeated movements and positions to understand how symptoms respond.

02

Classify

Patients are classified based on their response to specific movements and positions. The classification guides the management strategy.

03

Manage

Management combines education, specific exercises and self-management strategies tailored to the individual patient.

Learning with McKenzie

The Institute offers a structured education programme in the McKenzie System of MDT — progressing from the lumbar spine to the cervical and thoracic spine, the extremities, and advanced clinical reasoning.

  • Part CLumbar Spine 2 & Lower Extremities28 hrs

Part of a global institute

McKenzie Institute India is the Indian branch of McKenzie Institute International, headquartered in New Zealand — a global community of 28 branches, with MDT education presented in 12 further countries.

The Institute's purpose is to transform musculoskeletal care to an active, person-centred, self-management model — building a global community of clinicians who empower people with musculoskeletal pain and disability to achieve self-management.
